Biography
Joe Sawyer, originally named Joseph Sauers, was born on August 29, 1906, in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Renowned for his extensive career in film, Sawyer showcased his talents in over 200 productions from 1927 until 1962. He occasionally appeared under his birth name in various credits. His acting journey began at the Pasadena Playhouse, where he honed his skills before stepping into the limelight.
One of Sawyer's most memorable roles was that of Sergeant Biff O'Hara, which he portrayed in the beloved Rin Tin Tin series, spanning television, film, and radio formats. In 1954, he took on the iconic character Butch Cassidy in the anthology series Stories of the Century, a role he reprised in 1958 for the episode "The Outlaw Legion" of the western series Frontier Doctor, alongside notable guest stars Rex Allen, Doris Singleton, and Michael Ansara.
Throughout his career, Sawyer made guest appearances on several popular shows, including ABC's Maverick, Sugarfoot, and Peter Gunn, as well as NBC's Bat Masterson, further solidifying his reputation as a versatile character actor.
Joe Sawyer passed away on April 21, 1982, in Ashland, Oregon, due to liver cancer at the age of 75. He was laid to rest in Oregon, leaving behind a legacy marked by his significant contributions to the film and television industry.
