George Brent
Biography
George Brent, originally named George Brendan Nolan, was born on March 15, 1904, in Ballinasloe, County Galway, Ireland. He was the son of John J. and Mary Nolan, the latter hailing from Clonfad, Moore, County Roscommon. Brent embarked on his cinematic journey in 1930 with the film *Under Suspicion*, initially appearing in a series of lesser-known productions by Universal Studios and Fox. In 1932, he secured a contract with Warner Bros., where he would spend the next two decades establishing himself as a prominent leading man, particularly during the 1930s and 1940s.
Brent became a favorite of Bette Davis, frequently starring alongside her in 13 films, including *Jezebel* (1938) and *Dark Victory* (1939). His extensive filmography also featured performances with notable actresses such as Greta Garbo in *The Painted Veil* (1934), Ginger Rogers in *In Person* (1935), and Claudette Colbert in *Tomorrow Is Forever* (1946). However, by the late 1940s, Brent transitioned to "B" films, retiring from cinema in 1953 while still making appearances on television until 1960.
In 1960, he received recognition on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with two stars for his contributions to film and television. Brent was married five times, with his longest union being with Janet Michaels from 1947 until her passing in 1974. He passed away on May 26, 1979, in Solana Beach, California, leaving behind a legacy marked by significant collaborations and memorable performances.
