Biography
Sumiko Fuji (富司 純子, Fuji Sumiko), born on December 1, 1945, is a prominent Japanese actress renowned for her impactful contributions to cinema. She is the daughter of a Tōei studio producer and initially entered the entertainment industry under the name Junko Fuji (藤 純子). Fuji gained widespread recognition as a leading actress in yakuza films, often sharing the screen with legendary actors like Ken Takakura and Kōji Tsuruta. She became particularly famous for her role in the "Hibotan Bakuto" series, where she portrayed the fierce and skilled gambler known as Red Peony.
After a brief hiatus from acting following her marriage in 1972, Fuji made a comeback to television in 1974, adopting the name Sumiko Fuji. This marked the beginning of a renewed and diverse acting career that saw her return to film. Her talent was acknowledged with Blue Ribbon Awards for Best Supporting Actress in both 1999 and 2006, solidifying her status in the industry.
Fuji's personal life is closely intertwined with the arts; she is married to kabuki actor Onoe Kikugorō VII and is the mother of actress Shinobu Terajima and kabuki performer Onoe Kikunosuke V. Sumiko Fuji's legacy continues to inspire new generations of actors in Japan and beyond.
