Bibi Andersson
Biography
Berit Elisabet Andersson, widely recognized as Bibi Andersson, was born on November 11, 1935, and passed away on April 14, 2019. A distinguished Swedish actress, Andersson gained prominence through her extensive collaborations with the acclaimed director Ingmar Bergman.
From an early age, Bibi was captivated by the arts, influenced by her older sister Gerd Andersson, who pursued a successful career as a ballet dancer at the Royal Opera. Bibi's acting journey began with minor roles and commercials, but she made her film debut in Dum-Bom (1953), sharing the screen with Nils Poppe. Her passion led her to the Royal Dramatic Theatre's acting school in 1954. However, a brief romantic involvement with Bergman prompted her to leave school and join him at the Malmö City Theatre, where he directed her in various plays by renowned playwrights like August Strindberg and Hjalmar Bergman.
Bergman featured Andersson in his comedies, including Smiles of a Summer Night (1955), and later, she earned critical acclaim for her performances in Wild Strawberries (1957) and The Seventh Seal (1957). The 1960s marked a turning point, as she received international offers, with her role in I Never Promised You a Rose Garden (1977) standing out. In addition to her artistic contributions, Andersson actively supported cultural initiatives during the Yugoslav Wars, striving to bring theatre and arts to the people of Sarajevo.
