James B. Sikking

Biography

James B. Sikking (March 5, 1934 - July 13, 2024) was a distinguished American actor celebrated for his memorable performances on television and in film. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Lt. Howard Hunter on the iconic NBC series *Hill Street Blues* during the 1980s. Sikking also had notable roles on the ABC series *Doogie Howser, M.D.* as Dr. David Howser, and in the CBS drama *Brooklyn South* as Captain Stan Jonas. His voice work included the character of General Gordon in the 1998 animated series *Invasion America*.

Sikking’s film career began in 1955 and featured roles in acclaimed movies such as *The Competition*, *Outland*, *Up the Creek*, and *Star Trek III: The Search for Spock*, where he portrayed Captain Styles of the USS Excelsior. He received critical acclaim for his performance in the 1992 Fox TV movie *Doing Time on Maple Drive*, further solidifying his status as a versatile actor.

Born in Los Angeles, California, Sikking was part of a family with a rich history. His mother, Sue Sikking, co-founded Santa Monica's Unity-by-the-Sea Church. He had three brothers, including Robert Paxton Sikking, a decorated soldier whose experiences inspired the HBO miniseries *Band of Brothers*. James was also the father of actor Andrew Sikking, continuing the family's artistic legacy.
