She rose to fame in the early to mid-1990s as the dynamic lead vocalist of Bikini Kill, a pioneering feminist punk band that played a crucial role in the riot grrrl movement. Following her tenure with Bikini Kill, Hanna formed Le Tigre in the late 1990s, a band that blended punk rock with electronic elements and further showcased her innovative approach to music and activism.
In 1998, she released a solo album titled "Julie Ruin," marking her foray into lo-fi soundscapes and personal storytelling. This project laid the groundwork for her subsequent work, and in 2010, she debuted The Julie Ruin, a band that continued to reflect her commitment to feminist themes and social issues through a vibrant musical lens.
