Joe Odagiri
Biography
Jō Odagiri (小田切 譲 Odagiri Jō), born on February 16, 1976, is a prominent Japanese actor and musician, widely recognized by his stage name, Joe Odagiri (オダギリ ジョー Odagiri Jō). The South China Morning Post has characterized him as a "rebel," a depiction reflected in his distinctive grunge and gothic aesthetic.
Hailing from Tsuyama in Okayama Prefecture, a picturesque town celebrated for its cherry blossoms in spring, Odagiri initially enrolled at Kochi University but opted instead for an educational adventure in the United States. He aimed to major in film directing at California State University, Fresno; however, an application mishap redirected his path toward acting. This turn of events proved fortuitous, as just two years after his time in Fresno and participating in various theatrical productions in Japan, he gained fame for his role as Yusuke Godai, the lead character in the Kamen Rider series, specifically Kamen Rider Kuuga. He is credited with pioneering the "Ikemen Hero" trend, which showcases attractive actors in leading roles of popular television series.
Throughout his career, Odagiri has featured in numerous films and dramas. His role as a bisexual antagonist in the film "Azumi" earned him the Best New Actor Award at the 2003 Japan Academy Awards. The following year, he secured the Best Supporting Actor Award for his captivating role in Kitano Takeshi's acclaimed 2004 film, "Blood and Bones." Odagiri's remarkable talent and commanding presence have established him as a notable figure in the entertainment industry, with several film appearances scheduled for 2005, including "Maison de Himiko," where he plays a gay man in a relationship with the protagonist, portrayed by Shibasaki Kou’s father.
