William Frawley
Biography
William Frawley, born in Burlington, Iowa, found his passion for performance early, singing at St. Paul's Catholic Church and showcasing his talents at the Burlington Opera House. His professional journey began as a stenographer for the Union Pacific Railroad, but he quickly transitioned to entertainment, performing vaudeville acts alongside his brother, Paul. In 1910, he teamed up with pianist Franz Rath, taking their act to San Francisco, where his career began to flourish.
Frawley later formed a comedic duo with his wife, Edna Louise Broedt, known as "Frawley and Louise." Their act toured the Orpheum and Keith circuits until their divorce in 1927. Following this, he made his way to Broadway before heading to Hollywood in 1932, where he signed with Paramount Pictures. By 1951, Frawley had appeared in over 100 films, making a significant mark on the entertainment industry.
His most iconic role came when he was cast as Fred Mertz in the beloved television series I Love Lucy, which aired from 1951 until 1960. Following this success, he starred in the popular series My Three Sons from 1960 until his health began to decline. Unfortunately, Frawley's life was cut short when he suffered a heart attack on March 3, 1966, at the age of 79, while walking along Hollywood Boulevard. He is laid to rest in San Fernando Mission Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy cherished by fans and peers alike.
