Geraldine Page
Biography
Geraldine Sue Page (November 22, 1924 – June 13, 1987) was a distinguished American actress celebrated for her powerful performances on stage and screen. With a career spanning decades, she received numerous accolades, including an Academy Award from eight nominations, two Primetime Emmy Awards, two Golden Globes, a BAFTA Award, and four Tony Award nominations.
Born in Kirksville, Missouri, Page honed her craft at the Art Institute of Chicago and studied acting under luminaries such as Uta Hagen and Lee Strasberg in New York City. Her film debut came in the 1953 Western Hondo, which garnered her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. However, Page faced an eight-year hiatus from film due to being blacklisted in Hollywood. During this period, she continued to shine on television and in theater, earning her first Tony nomination for Sweet Bird of Youth (1959–60), a role she reprised in its 1962 film adaptation, for which she won a Golden Globe.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, she received additional Academy nominations for You're a Big Boy Now (1966) and Pete 'n' Tillie (1972). Page's remarkable versatility was highlighted with her role in Woody Allen's Interiors (1978), winning a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress. Inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1979, she returned to Broadway in Agnes of God (1982), earning another Tony nomination. Her career culminated in her Oscar-winning performance in The Trip to Bountiful (1985). Page passed away in New York City in 1987, during a run of Blithe Spirit, for which she received her final Tony nomination.
