Jan Rubeš

Biography

Jan Rubeš was born in Czechoslovakia, where he honed his musical talents and graduated from the Conservatory of Music in Prague in 1945. Shortly after, he became the youngest basso singer at the esteemed Prague Opera House and made a mark with leading roles at the Pilsen Opera House during his formative years. In 1948, he represented his homeland at the International Music Festival in Geneva, where he secured first place in his category.

Later that year, on New Year's Eve, Rubeš emigrated to Canada in pursuit of broader musical opportunities. He joined the Canadian Opera Company, where he garnered acclaim for his performances in notable roles, including Boris in "Boris Godunov," Schigolch in "Lulu," and Mephisto in "Faust." He also contributed to the company as the director of touring and program development.

Expanding his artistic horizons, Rubeš ventured into radio and television. From 1975 to 1983, he created and hosted the popular TVOntario show "Guess What?" while also appearing in numerous television dramas. His dedication to the medium was recognized with the Earle Grey Award, honoring his lifetime achievements in Canadian television. Jan Rubeš's legacy is marked by his remarkable contributions to the performing arts both in Canada and abroad.
