Biography

Richard Gilliland, born on January 23, 1950, in Fort Worth, Texas, is a distinguished American actor known for his work in television and film. He made his mark in the entertainment industry during the 1970s, gaining recognition for his roles in popular series such as "Thirtysomething," "Party of Five," and "Little Women." One of his notable recurring roles was on "Designing Women," where he met his future wife, Jean Smart, who portrayed Charlene in the show. The couple shares a son named Connor.

In addition to his memorable performances, Gilliland appeared as Ellis Kapp on "The Unit" and portrayed Captain Stan Cotter in the hit series "24," coinciding with his wife’s role as First Lady Martha Logan in season five. He also shares a close friendship with fellow actor Joe Mantegna.

Beyond his television work, Gilliland is passionate about the theater. He has participated in several stage productions, including "Balancing Act" alongside Yeardley Smith and "I Remember You" with Tony Danza, both at Garry Marshall's Falcon Theatre.
