Sidney Blackmer
Biography
Sidney Alderman Blackmer (July 13, 1895 – October 6, 1973) was a distinguished American actor known for his versatile performances across stage and screen. Hailing from Salisbury, North Carolina, Blackmer initially ventured into the insurance and finance sector before discovering his passion for acting. His career was sparked while working as a laborer on a construction site, where he witnessed a Pearl White serial being filmed, prompting him to pursue acting seriously.
Relocating to New York City, he sought opportunities in theater while also taking on various roles in film studios located in Fort Lee, New Jersey. His film debut came with a small part in the widely popular serial, The Perils of Pauline (1914). Blackmer made his Broadway debut in 1917, but his acting career was temporarily halted due to his service in the U.S. military during World War I. After returning from the war, he resumed his theatrical pursuits and, in 1929, re-entered the film industry, ultimately appearing in over 120 films.
Among his notable achievements, Blackmer won a Tony Award for Best Actor in Drama in 1950 for his performance in Come Back, Little Sheba. He became particularly recognized for his portrayals of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt and his role in the acclaimed film Rosemary's Baby (1968). A dedicated humanitarian, he served as the national vice president of the Muscular Dystrophy Association and received the prestigious North Carolina Award in Fine Arts in 1972. Upon his death in 1973, he was laid to rest in Chestnut Hill Cemetery in his beloved hometown.
