Anna Magnani (7 March 1908 – 26 September 1973) was a celebrated Italian actress renowned for her powerful performances in both theater and film. She achieved international acclaim when she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1955 for her role as a Sicilian widow in Tennessee Williams' The Rose Tattoo, a part specifically written for her by the playwright.

Born in Rome to an Egyptian father and an Italian mother, Magnani's journey to stardom was marked by resilience as she supported herself singing in nightclubs while studying at the Academy of Dramatic Art. Her personal life was not without challenges; her only son contracted polio at a young age, leaving him disabled.

Known as "La Lupa," or "the she-wolf," Magnani's fierce and passionate persona captivated audiences, earning her accolades from critics and directors alike. Time magazine hailed her as "fiery," while theater critic Harold Clurman described her acting style as "volcanic." Director Roberto Rossellini praised her as "the greatest acting genius since Eleonora Duse."

Magnani's career surged after her breakthrough role in Goffredo Alessandrini's La cieca di Sorrento (1934) and further soared with her performance in Rossellini's landmark film, Rome, Open City (1945), a cornerstone of Italian neorealism. Other notable works include The Miracle (1948), Bellissima (1951), The Fugitive Kind (1960), and Mamma Roma (1962). By the 1950s, she was already recognized as one of the most remarkable actresses of her time, drawing comparisons to the iconic Greta Garbo.
