John Russell
Biography
John Lawrence Russell was a notable American actor and World War II veteran, renowned for his portrayal of Marshal Dan Troop in the acclaimed ABC western series Lawman, which aired from 1958 to 1962. He also starred as international adventurer Tim Kelly in the syndicated show Soldiers of Fortune from 1955 to 1957.
Russell began his film career after signing with 20th Century Fox in 1945, making his debut as a guard in A Royal Scandal. While at Fox, he took on various supporting roles, including a junior law partner in the comedy Sitting Pretty and a navy pilot in Slattery's Hurricane. He later transitioned to Republic Pictures, where he secured a leading part.
In 1955, Russell was cast in the television series Soldiers of Fortune, but it was his role as the reserved Marshal Dan Troop that became his signature performance in Lawman. The show, which co-starred Peter Brown as Deputy Johnny McKay and Peggie Castle as Lily Merrill, showcased Russell as a U.S. frontier peace officer guiding his younger ally. Concurrently, he appeared as an outlaw in the 1958 season premiere of Sugarfoot, another successful western series.
Additionally, Russell featured in several films produced by Warner Bros., including a Sioux chief in Yellowstone Kelly and the corrupt cattle rancher Nathan Burdette in the classic western Rio Bravo alongside John Wayne. Over his career, he appeared in over 20 films, including several directed by his friend Clint Eastwood, notably as Marshal Stockburn in Eastwood's 1985 film, Pale Rider. He also took on the role of Commander Stone, a blue-skinned alien from Alpha Centauri, in the second season of the children's series Jason of Star Command, stepping in for James Doohan.
