Biography
Lynn Whitfield, born on February 15, 1953, is a distinguished American actress who has made a significant impact in film, television, and theater. She embarked on her acting journey in television and stage productions before transitioning to film, where she began to take on supporting roles. Whitfield's breakout performance as the legendary Josephine Baker in the HBO film The Josephine Baker Story (1991) earned her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie and led to a nomination for a Golden Globe Award.
Throughout the 1990s, Whitfield starred in numerous made-for-television films and took leading roles in theatrical productions, such as A Thin Line Between Love and Hate (1996), Gone Fishin' (1997), Eve's Bayou (1997), Stepmom (1998), Head of State (2003), Madea's Family Reunion (2006), and The Women (2008). Her work continued into the 2000s and 2010s, showcasing her versatility as an actress. From 2016 to 2020, she portrayed Lady Mae Greenleaf in the critically acclaimed Oprah Winfrey Network drama series Greenleaf, earning two NAACP Image Awards and a Gracie Award for her performance. More recently, she appeared in Nappily Ever After (2018), Vacation Friends (2021), and The Retirement Plan (2023). Over her career, Whitfield has garnered a total of seven NAACP Image Awards, solidifying her legacy in the entertainment industry.
