Martin Balsam
Biography
Martin Henry Balsam (November 4, 1919 – February 13, 1996) was a distinguished American character actor whose career spanned several decades, leaving an indelible mark on both film and television. Balsam is perhaps most famously recognized for his portrayal of the astute detective Milton Arbogast in Alfred Hitchcock's iconic thriller Psycho (1960). His impressive range allowed him to excel in various roles, including Arnold Burns in the critically acclaimed A Thousand Clowns (1965), a performance that garnered him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
In addition to his film achievements, Balsam also showcased his talent in the courtroom drama 12 Angry Men (1957) as Juror #1, and he brought a memorable presence to the role of Mr. Green in the gripping crime thriller The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974).
Balsam's versatility extended to television, where he played the character Murray Klein in the beloved sitcom Archie Bunker's Place from 1979 to 1983. His ability to seamlessly transition between drama and comedy solidified his reputation as a skilled performer.
