Esther Williams
Biography
Esther Jane Williams (August 8, 1921 – June 6, 2013) was a celebrated American swimmer and actress who captivated audiences both in and out of the water. As a teenager, she excelled on the Los Angeles Athletic Club swim team, setting numerous regional and national records. Her aspirations for Olympic glory were thwarted by the outbreak of World War II, which led her to join Billy Rose's Aquacade. There, she replaced Olympic champion Eleanor Holm during the production's move to San Francisco, where she swam alongside famed Tarzan actor Johnny Weissmuller.
Williams' talent did not go unnoticed; she was discovered by scouts from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and soon transitioned to film. After her initial appearances in supporting roles, she rose to stardom in the 1940s and early 1950s through a series of "aquamusicals," featuring stunning synchronized swimming and elaborate water choreography. Notably, between 1945 and 1949, she consistently had films among the top 20 highest-grossing releases.
One of her most iconic performances came in 1952 when she portrayed Australian swimmer Annette Kellerman in *Million Dollar Mermaid*, a film that solidified her nickname at MGM. After departing the studio in 1956, Williams ventured into television, hosting popular water-themed specials and even commentating on synchronized swimming during the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.
In addition to her entertainment career, Williams was a savvy businesswoman, investing in various ventures, including a restaurant chain and a line of swimwear. Her legacy endures through her contributions to film, swimming, and business.
