Biography

Natalie Wood, born Natalia Zacharenko on July 20, 1938, was a prominent American actress whose career began in childhood and seamlessly transitioned into young adult roles. She embarked on her acting journey at the tender age of four and garnered significant attention by co-starring in the classic Miracle on 34th Street in 1947 when she was just eight.

As a teenager, Wood earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress due to her standout performance in Rebel Without a Cause (1955), followed by a notable role in John Ford’s The Searchers (1956). Her illustrious career continued with acclaimed performances in iconic musicals such as West Side Story (1961) and Gypsy (1962). She received further Academy Award nominations for her roles in Splendor in the Grass (1961) and Love with the Proper Stranger (1963). Other films during this period included Sex and the Single Girl (1964), Inside Daisy Clover (1965), and Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969).

In the 1970s, Wood took a step back from the film industry to raise her two daughters—one with her second husband Richard Gregson and another with her first husband, Robert Wagner, whom she remarried. Throughout the decade, she acted in only two feature films but appeared more frequently on television, notably winning a Golden Globe Award for her role in a remake of From Here to Eternity (1979). Wood's cinematic journey is often viewed as reflective of the evolution of modern American womanhood. Tragically, she passed away on November 29, 1981, at age 43, off the coast of Santa Catalina Island while on a break from filming her comeback project, Brainstorm (1983). The circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear, leading to her cause of death being listed as "drowning and other undetermined factors" by the coroner's office in 2012.
