Biography

Anthony Warde (November 4, 1908 – January 8, 1975) was a prominent American actor known for his extensive work in film, appearing in over 150 movies from 1937 to 1964. Born in Pennsylvania, Warde's entertainment career began with the film Escape by Night, after which he gradually found his niche in Hollywood.

Warde's film debut occurred in 1936, but he truly gained recognition as one of the most prolific henchmen during the 1930s and 1940s, often portraying menacing figures such as ruthless bodyguards, underground leaders, and notorious rustlers. He frequently took on roles in low-budget crime dramas and Westerns, showcasing his versatility in character acting. Notable appearances include his roles in classic serials like Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars (1938), The Spider Returns (1941), and the 1943 adaptation of Batman, as well as in Republic’s The Masked Marvel (1943) and The Black Widow (1947).

Perhaps Warde's most memorable role was as Killer Kane, the gangster ruler of Earth, in Universal's 1939 version of Buck Rogers. In the 1950s, he transitioned to television, making guest appearances including a notable stint as a counterfeiter on Amos 'N' Andy.

Warde's final film role came in The Carpetbaggers, a 1964 adaptation of Harold Robbins' novel. After retiring from acting, he ventured into business by owning a men's clothing store. He passed away in Hollywood at the age of 66.
