John Herbert Gleason (February 26, 1916 – June 24, 1987) was a celebrated American performer, revered as "The Great One" for his contributions to comedy, acting, writing, and composing. Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, Gleason honed a unique comedic style characterized by bold visual gags and sharp dialogue. He gained widespread fame for his portrayal of Ralph Kramden, a city bus driver, in the iconic television series The Honeymooners. Additionally, he created The Jackie Gleason Show, a variety program that enjoyed impressive viewership from the mid-1950s until 1970. Initially broadcast from New York City, the show relocated to Miami Beach, Florida, in 1964, coinciding with Gleason's decision to make the city his permanent home.
In cinema, Gleason is remembered for his memorable performances, particularly as Minnesota Fats in the 1961 film The Hustler, where he starred alongside Paul Newman. He also portrayed the character Buford T. Justice in the Smokey and the Bandit film series from 1977 to 1983, sharing the screen with Burt Reynolds. Gleason's influence on comedy and television remains significant, reflecting his talent for creating relatable and larger-than-life characters that continue to resonate with audiences today.
