Marne Maitland
Biography
Marne Maitland was a distinctive character actor, born in Calcutta, India, and educated at Magdalen College, Cambridge. His burgeoning acting career faced a significant pause due to six years of service in the British Army during World War II. Following the war, he joined the prestigious Old Vic Company, which paved the way for his transition to film.
Renowned for his unique features, including a prominent hooked nose and penetrating eyes, Maitland frequently portrayed sinister characters, excelling in roles as Arabic or Central Asian villains involved in diamond smuggling, drug trafficking, and black market dealings. Notably, he showcased his versatility by taking on more virtuous roles, such as Commissioner Govindaswami in the 1956 film *La croisée des destins* and a cardinal in *Les souliers de Saint-Pierre* (1968).
Maitland's early career included significant contributions to Hammer Studios, where he delivered memorable performances as Patel Shari, a member of the murderous Kali sect in *Les étrangleurs de Bombay* (1959), and as a malevolent Malay servant in *La femme reptile* (1966). His television work was equally impressive, with notable appearances in series like *The Saint* (1962) and *Département S* (1969). He gained acclaim for his role as the enigmatic dissident Pandit Baba in the award-winning miniseries *The Jewel in the Crown* (1984). From the early 1970s until his passing, Maitland resided in Rome, leaving behind a legacy of compelling performances.
