Preston Foster
Biography
Preston Foster (August 24, 1900 – July 14, 1970) was a multifaceted American actor and singer whose career spanned both stage and screen. He made his film debut in 1929 after an impressive tenure on Broadway, where he showcased his talent in productions like *Two Seconds* in 1931 alongside Edward J. Pawley. Foster's filmography features significant works such as *Doctor X* (1932), *I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang* (1932), *Annie Oakley* (1935), *The Last Days of Pompeii* (1935), and *My Friend Flicka* (1943), demonstrating his versatility as an actor.
In the 1950s, he took on a prominent role in the television series *Waterfront*, portraying Captain John Herrick. His contributions to the entertainment industry were recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. At times, he was credited as Preston S. Foster in his film appearances.
Foster's personal life included a marriage to stage actress Gertrude Warren from 1926 to 1945, with whom he had a daughter, Stephanie. He later married actress Sheila Darcy in 1946, who remained with him until his passing.
During World War II, he served in the United States Coast Guard, achieving the rank of Captain, Temporary Reserve, and later was honored with the rank of Commodore. In addition to acting, Foster also enjoyed a successful singing career; in 1948, he formed a trio with his wife Sheila and musician Gene Leis, performing on radio and in clubs.
