Frank Finlay
Biography
Frank Finlay garnered accolades including Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA nominations for his portrayal of Iago in Stuart Burge’s 1965 adaptation of Othello, based on Laurence Olivier’s acclaimed production. He also received the Best Actor Award at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
Finlay is well-known for his iconic role as Porthos, the legendary musketeer from Alexandre Dumas' novels, in three films directed by Richard Lester: The Three Musketeers (1974), The Four Musketeers (1975), and The Return of the Musketeers (1989). His extensive filmography includes notable works such as The Longest Day; Tony Richardson’s The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner; Martin Ritt’s The Molly Maguires; Bob Clark’s Murder by Decree; Alan Bridges’ The Return of the Soldier, for which he earned a BAFTA nomination; Franco Zeffirelli’s Sparrow; Eric Styles’ Dreaming of Joseph Lees; and more recently, Roman Polanski’s acclaimed The Pianist and Norma Jewison’s The Statement.
In television, Finlay won two BAFTA Awards for his roles in The Death of Adolf Hitler, in which he portrayed Hitler under Rex Firkin’s direction, and The Adventures of Don Quixote, where he played Sancho Panza alongside Rex Harrison, directed by Alvin Rakoff. His groundbreaking performances in Bouquet of Barbed Wire and Another Bouquet, as well as 84 Charing Cross Road and the recent series The Sins, further showcase his talent. Born in Farnworth, Lancashire, Finlay began his stage career before receiving the Sir James Knott Scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). He led theatre companies in both London and Broadway.
In recognition of his contributions to the arts, he was appointed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the New Year’s Honours List of 1984 and received his honor from the Queen in February of
