Felix Bressart
Biography
Felix Bressart (March 2, 1892 – March 17, 1949) was a distinguished German-American actor known for his work in both theater and film. Born in East Prussia, he had already made a name for himself on stage before transitioning to the silver screen with his film debut in 1928. Bressart initially appeared in supporting roles, such as the Bailiff in the popular film *Die Drei von der Tankstelle* (1930), but quickly progressed to lead roles in various productions.
Following the rise of the Nazi regime in 1933, Bressart, who was of Jewish descent, emigrated from Germany to Austria and later to the United States, continuing to work in German-language films during his time in Europe. His American film career began with *Three Smart Girls Grow Up* (1939), produced by Joe Pasternak, a former colleague from Europe. Bressart's talent soon caught the attention of Hollywood's influential German community, leading to collaborations with notable directors like Ernst Lubitsch.
Bressart gained acclaim for his roles in major films, including Lubitsch's *Ninotchka* and *To Be or Not to Be*, where he delivered a poignant rendition of Shylock’s speech from *The Merchant of Venice*. His filmography includes memorable performances in *Blossoms in the Dust* (1941), *The Seventh Cross* (1944), and *Without Love* (1945). One of his most significant roles came in the musical comedy *Ding Dong Williams* (1945).
Tragically, Bressart passed away from leukemia at the age of 57, during the production of *My Friend Irma* (1949), leaving behind a legacy of nearly 40 films that showcased his unique charm and talent.
