Iron Eyes Cody
Biography
Iron Eyes Cody, originally named Espera Oscar de Corti, was an actor of Italian descent who became known for his portrayals of Native Americans in Hollywood films. He gained recognition for his role as Chief Iron Eyes in Bob Hope's comedy, The Paleface, and became an iconic figure as the "Crying Indian" in the well-known "Keep America Beautiful" public service announcement, where he shed a tear over litter. Cody's acting career began in the early 1930s, and he remained active in both film and television until his passing.
Cody often claimed to have Native American heritage, stating that his father was Cherokee and his mother Cree, while frequently altering his birthplace and tribal affiliations. To many who were unfamiliar with Indigenous cultures, he seemed to embody the stereotypical representation of Native Americans, often wearing his film costumes—complete with braided wigs and fringed leather outfits—in everyday life, particularly during visits from photographers.
Throughout his career, he appeared in over 200 films, including significant roles in classics such as The Big Trail, The Scarlet Letter, and A Man Called Horse. He also featured in various television series, including The Cisco Kid and The Rebel. Despite his claims of Native ancestry, revelations after his death disclosed that he was of Sicilian heritage. Iron Eyes Cody passed away at the age of 94 from mesothelioma at his residence in Los Angeles on January 4, 1999.
