Emory Parnell
Biography
Emory Parnell (December 29, 1892 – June 22, 1979) was a prolific American performer renowned for his extensive work in vaudeville and film, amassing over 250 credits during his impressive 36-year career. Often referred to as "The Big Swede," he was sometimes billed under variations of his name, including "Emery" or "Parnel."
In pursuit of greater opportunities, Parnell relocated to Los Angeles with his wife, quickly immersing himself in the film industry. His distinctive red-faced Irish expressions of frustration made him a recognizable figure, and he took on diverse roles such as policemen, doormen, and small-town entrepreneurs. One of his early film appearances was in the musical comedy Doctor Rhythm (1938).
While Parnell often appeared in "B" movies, including the beloved Ma and Pa Kettle series, he also made significant contributions to "A" films. A standout role came in the 1941 film Louisiana Purchase, where he portrayed a Paramount studio executive humorously cautioning against libel suits through song. Additionally, Parnell was a frequent collaborator with acclaimed writer-director Preston Sturges, appearing in five of his films during the 1940s. Notably, he played the crooked banker Mr. Tuerck in The Miracle of Morgan's Creek, opposing William Demarest's character. Parnell also left a lasting impression as the cantankerous socialite Ajax Bullion in the Three Stooges short All the World's a Stooge, further solidifying his legacy in classic American cinema.
