Dr. Maureen Brennan, a psychiatrist at a youth treatment center, takes on America, a troubled bi-racial boy grappling with his tumultuous past. Taken from his crack-addicted mother as an infant, America faces instability and disappointment, including a brief period of care with Mrs. Harper, an elderly nanny. After being reunited with his mother, he suffers abandonment again, leading to years of anger, academic struggles, and isolation. Following a suicide attempt, America arrives at the treatment center, where Dr. Brennan guides him in confronting his trauma, finding resilience, and reclaiming his life.
