As World War II looms, American businessman Jones and his partner Johnny arrive in China, intent on selling oil to the advancing Japanese forces. Initially indifferent to the plight of the locals, Jones encounters the passionate teacher Carolyn Grant during a journey to Shanghai, igniting a contentious yet electrifying connection.
