John McGiver
Biography
John Irwin McGiver (November 5, 1913 – September 9, 1975) was a distinguished character actor whose career spanned two decades, from 1955 to 1975, during which he made over a hundred appearances in both film and television.
Recognized for his distinctive owl-like visage and a rich mid-Atlantic accent, McGiver delivered memorable performances in various roles. Notably, he portrayed the zealous Mr. O'Daniel in the iconic film Midnight Cowboy, captured hearts as the warm-hearted Tiffany's salesman in Breakfast at Tiffany's, and brought depth to the role of the principled Senator Jordan in the original adaptation of The Manchurian Candidate.
In addition to his film work, McGiver became a familiar face on television, featuring in numerous shows and commercials. In the 1960s, he appeared in a memorable advertisement for Baggies and was the star of one of the earliest and most popular American Express commercials, famously asking viewers, "Do you know me?"
Throughout his career, McGiver showcased his ability to portray a diverse range of characters, leaving an indelible mark on the entertainment industry and endearing himself to audiences everywhere.
