Phil Brown
Biography
Philip Brown was a notable American actor, born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He pursued his passion for acting at Stanford University, where he majored in dramatics and became a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Early in his career, Brown showcased his talent on stage with New York's Group Theater. Following the theater's closure, he and fellow actors transitioned to Hollywood, where Brown not only acted in films but also co-founded the renowned Actors' Laboratory.
In 1946, he gained recognition for portraying Nick Adams, the iconic character from Ernest Hemingway's works, in Robert Siodmak's film adaptation of The Killers, sharing the screen with William Conrad and Charles McGraw. However, his ties to the Actors' Lab later led to challenges when the House Un-American Activities Committee launched investigations into its members. Although he was not involved in communist activities, Brown found himself blacklisted in 1952, prompting him to relocate to England with his family, where they stayed until 1993.
During his time in the UK, Brown continued to act in theater, television, and film, and also took on directing roles. He is perhaps best remembered for his portrayal of Owen Lars, Luke Skywalker's uncle, in the classic Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977). In the 1990s, he returned to the U.S. and participated in autograph events. Phil Brown passed away from pneumonia on February 9, 2006, at the age of 89.
