Biography

Chen Kuan-Tai (Chinese: 陳觀泰), born on September 24, 1945, in Guangdong, China, is a distinguished figure in the realm of martial arts cinema. Renowned for his extensive contributions primarily to Shaw Brothers Studio, Chen was among the earliest martial artists to join the company, showcasing his impressive skills on screen. His cinematic journey began with the 1969 film *The Chinese Boxer*, where he shared the spotlight with notable actors Jimmy Wang Yu and Ben McDonald.

Chen's versatility as an actor was highlighted in his memorable performances in *The Tea House* and its sequel, *Big Brother Cheng*, both directed by Chih-hung Kwei. These roles solidified his reputation as a credible actor beyond martial arts. His collaboration with the iconic director Lau Kar-leung resulted in significant hits such as *Challenge of the Masters* and *Executioners from Shaolin*, which further elevated his status. After a successful run with Shaw Brothers, Chen ventured into directing with the 1977 film *Iron Monkey*, which should not be confused with the later 1993 version by Yuen Woo-Ping.

Chen eventually returned to the Shaw Brothers for projects like *Crippled Avengers*, *Killer Constable*, and *3 Evil Masters*, appearing in over 100 films throughout his career, approximately 80 of which were with Shaw. His more recent works include Wilson Yip's 2006 film *Dragon Tiger Gate* and the 2007 remake of the classic *The Valiant Ones*.
