Pierre Mondy

Biography

Pierre Mondy, originally named Pierre Cuq, was a prominent French actor and director, born on February 10, 1925. He passed away on September 15, 2012, at the age of 87 due to lymphoma. Throughout his illustrious career, Mondy was married four times, all to fellow actresses: Claude Gensac, Pascale Roberts, Annie Fournier, and Catherine Allary.

His cinematic journey began in 1949 with his debut in Jacques Becker's film, Rendez-vous de juillet, and he would go on to feature in over 140 films. His portrayal of Napoleon Bonaparte in Abel Gance’s 1960 film Austerlitz garnered him international acclaim. In the 1970s, he found significant success with the comedy Mais où est donc passée la septième compagnie?. From 1992 to 2005, Mondy was a familiar face on French television, starring in the series Les Cordier, juge et flic.

In addition to his work in film, Mondy lent his voice to characters in animated features, including Caius Obtus in Asterix et la Surprise de Cesar (1985) and Cetinlapsus in Asterix Chez Le Bretons (1986).

Mondy also showcased his talents behind the camera, directing four films and thirteen TV episodes, as well as writing adaptations for two television screenplays. His theatrical direction included over 60 productions, with a notable highlight being the original staging of La Cage aux folles in 1973, featuring the performances of Jean Poiret and Michel Serrault.
