Biography

Geraldine Leigh Chaplin, born on July 31, 1944, is a distinguished American actress renowned for her diverse roles and significant contributions to film. As the daughter of legendary filmmaker Charlie Chaplin and his fourth wife, Oona O'Neill, she is the first of their eight children. Initially pursuing a career in dance and modeling, Chaplin made a remarkable shift to acting, gaining widespread recognition for her performance as Tonya in David Lean's epic, Doctor Zhivago (1965), which earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

In 1967, she debuted on Broadway in Lillian Hellman's classic, The Little Foxes, and took on the role of Queen Nefertiti in Raúl Araiza's Nefertiti and Akhenaton (1973), showcasing her versatility. Chaplin garnered another Golden Globe nomination for her work in Robert Altman's Nashville (1975) and received a BAFTA nod for Welcome to L.A. (1976). She also portrayed her grandmother, Hannah Chaplin, in the biographical film Chaplin (1992), which brought her a third Golden Globe nomination.

A significant figure in Spanish and French cinema, her credits include acclaimed films such as Les Uns et les Autres (1981) and Life Is a Bed of Roses (1983). Chaplin was in a long-term partnership with director Carlos Saura, collaborating on notable projects like Cría Cuervos (1976). In recognition of her contributions to cinema, she received a Goya Award for En la ciudad sin límites (2002) and was honored with the Gold Medal from the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences in 2006.
