Biography

Gope T. Samtani, born Gobind Tejoomal Samtani on October 1, 1943, is a prominent Indonesian businessman and film producer of Indian heritage. He is best known as the founder and owner of Rapi Films, a notable production company within the Indonesian film industry.

Originally aspiring to become a doctor, Gope's career path took a different turn as he began his professional life as a clothing trader. His passion for cinema, which began in his childhood, ultimately led him to establish Rapi Films in 1968 with a modest initial investment of around Rp 3 million. Initially, the company was set up as an export-import business, and Gope sought valuable insights from his experienced brother, Subagio Samtani, as well as from Turino Djunaidi of PT Sarinande Film.

Rapi Films made its mark in 1970 with the release of its inaugural film, *Air Mata Kekasih*. By the early 1980s, the company was producing an average of three films annually, resulting in a total of 45 titles by 1985.

Gope's significant contributions to the film industry have not gone unnoticed. He received the Parfi award for being an Exemplary Producer and won the prestigious Antemas Award twice for the highest-grossing films, namely *Rahasia Perkawinan* at the FFI 1981 in Semarang and *Nyi Blorong* at the FFI 1983 in Medan. His commitment and achievements have solidified his status as a key figure in Indonesian cinema.
