Richard White
Biography
Richard White, born on August 4, 1953, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is a distinguished American actor, opera singer, and voice artist. He is perhaps most renowned for his iconic portrayal of Gaston in Disney's animated classic "Beauty and the Beast," as well as in the beloved series "House of Mouse." With a rich vocal range that spans from low tenor to baritone, White has made significant contributions to both musical theater and opera.
Throughout his career, White has showcased his talents in various prominent roles. He portrayed Gaylord Ravenal in the acclaimed production of "Show Boat" at the Paper Mill Playhouse and took on the character of Robert Mission in "The New Moon" at the New York City Opera. Notably, he originated the role of Erik in the world premiere of the musical "Phantom," composed by Arthur Kopit and Maury Yeston, and contributed his voice to the cast recording.
White's Broadway credits include the role of Joey in "The Most Happy Fella," along with appearances in revivals of classic shows like "Brigadoon," "South Pacific," and "Auntie Mame." Although he was a contender for the voice of Governor Ratcliffe in Disney's "Pocahontas," the producers ultimately chose David Ogden Stiers, as they felt White's distinct voice would evoke memories of Gaston. Richard White's impressive body of work continues to resonate with audiences, solidifying his legacy in the world of performing arts.
