Charles Coburn
Biography
Charles Douville Coburn (June 19, 1877 – August 30, 1961) was a distinguished American actor celebrated for his contributions to both film and theater, particularly in the realm of comedy. Coburn's remarkable talent earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his charming portrayal of a retired millionaire in the 1943 film The More the Merrier.
Born in Macon, Georgia, Coburn was raised in Savannah by his parents, Emma Louise Sprigman and Moses Douville Coburn. His theatrical journey began at the tender age of 14, where he undertook various roles at the Savannah Theater, eventually becoming the theater's manager by his late teens. He made his Broadway debut in 1901, and by 1905, he had established an acting company with actress Ivah Wills, whom he married a year later. The couple frequently graced the Broadway stage together until Wills' passing in 1937.
Following this personal loss, Coburn transitioned to the film industry in Los Angeles, where he garnered acclaim for his performances. In addition to his Oscar-winning role, he received nominations for The Devil and Miss Jones (1941) and The Green Years (1946). His filmography includes classics such as Of Human Hearts (1938), The Lady Eve (1941), and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), showcasing his range from comedy to serious drama.
In recognition of his impactful career, Coburn was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960, solidifying his legacy in the entertainment world.
