Pierre Watkin
Biography
Pierre Frank Watkin (December 29, 1889 – February 3, 1960) was a prominent American character actor known for his extensive work in films, serials, and television series, particularly in the Western genre, spanning from the 1930s to the 1950s. He is perhaps most famously recognized as the father of Eleanor Twitchell, the character who won the heart of baseball legend Lou Gehrig in the 1942 film *Pride of the Yankees*.
Born in Sioux City, Iowa, Watkin established his own theatrical company, the Pierre Watkin Players, in the 1920s. The troupe relocated from Sioux Falls to Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1927. His career flourished as he portrayed Perry White in the Superman serials of the late 1940s, alongside Kirk Alyn and Noel Neill.
In the television series *Adventures of Superman*, Watkin played various roles but was slated to return as Perry White in a revival set for 1959. However, the tragic deaths of series star George Reeves and original Perry White actor John Hamilton led to the cancellation of those plans.
Throughout the 1950s, Watkin made guest appearances in several popular series, including *Fury*, *Brave Eagle*, and *Perry Mason*, where he played Judge Keetley in three episodes. He also appeared in notable Westerns like *Colt .45* and *The Range Rider*. Watkin passed away six months after Reeves, leaving behind a legacy in classic American cinema and television.
