Brigitte Bardot
Biography
Brigitte Anne-Marie Bardot, born on September 28, 1934, is a former French fashion model, actress, singer, and dedicated animal rights advocate.
Initially, Bardot dreamt of becoming a ballet dancer. Her acting journey commenced in 1952, and she quickly rose to international fame with her iconic performance in her then-husband Roger Vadim's provocative film, "And God Created Woman." This role catapulted her into the spotlight, followed by her appearance in Jean-Luc Godard's influential 1963 film, "Contempt." For her captivating performance in Louis Malle's 1965 film, "Viva Maria!," she received a BAFTA nomination for Best Foreign Actress.
Bardot intrigued many intellectuals in France, becoming a focal point in Simone de Beauvoir's 1959 essay, "The Lolita Syndrome." In this work, de Beauvoir portrayed Bardot as a "locomotive of women's history," emphasizing her role as the most liberated woman of post-war France through an existential lens.
Bardot stepped away from the entertainment scene in 1973. Throughout her career, she appeared in a total of 47 films, participated in various musical performances, and recorded around 80 songs. Although she was honored with the Légion d'honneur in 1985, she declined to accept the accolade.
Post-retirement, Bardot became an outspoken advocate for animal rights. However, in the 1990s, she sparked controversy with her remarks on immigration and Islam in France, resulting in five fines for "inciting racial hatred."
