Gregory Peck
Biography
Eldred Gregory Peck (April 5, 1916 – June 12, 2003) was a celebrated American actor, recognized as one of the leading film stars from the 1940s through the 1970s. In 1999, the American Film Institute honored him as the 12th-greatest male star in Classic Hollywood Cinema.
Peck honed his craft at the Neighborhood Playhouse under the tutelage of Sanford Meisner, participating in over 50 stage productions, including three on Broadway. His breakthrough role came in 1944 with the critically acclaimed film The Keys of the Kingdom, directed by John M. Stahl, which earned him his first Academy Award nomination. He continued to find success with notable films such as The Valley of Decision (1944), Spellbound (1945), and The Yearling (1946). However, by the late 1940s, his box office appeal waned with films like The Paradine Case (1947) and The Great Sinner (1948). The 1950s and 1960s marked a resurgence in his career, highlighted by roles in Captain Horatio Hornblower (1951), David and Bathsheba (1951), The Snows of Kilimanjaro (1952), and the iconic Roman Holiday (1953), which earned him a Golden Globe.
Peck's filmography also includes significant works such as Moby Dick (1956), The Guns of Navarone (1961), and To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. His portrayal of complex characters often addressed moral and social issues. In addition to acting, Peck was politically active, opposing the House Un-American Activities Committee and receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Lyndon B. Johnson in 1969 for his humanitarian efforts. He passed away in his sleep at the age of 87 from bronchopneumonia.
