Queen Latifah
Biography
Dana Elaine Owens, better known as Queen Latifah, was born on March 18, 1970, in Newark, New Jersey. She emerged as a multifaceted talent in the entertainment industry, gaining fame as a rapper, actress, and singer. Her career took off in 1989 when she signed with Tommy Boy Records and released her debut album, *All Hail the Queen*, which included the influential track “Ladies First.” Following this, her second album, *Nature of a Sista’* (1991), further showcased her unique voice in hip-hop.
Queen Latifah gained widespread recognition for her role as Khadijah James on the beloved sitcom *Living Single* (1993-1998). Her third album, *Black Reign* (1993), made history as the first RIAA-certified album by a solo female rapper, featuring the powerful single “U.N.I.T.Y.,” which highlighted issues of violence against women and the portrayal of Black female sexuality. The album earned her a Grammy Award and reached No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Transitioning into film, she starred in notable productions such as *Set It Off* (1996) and *Chicago* (2002), the latter earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Over the years, she released several more albums, including *The Dana Owens Album* (2004) and *Trav'lin' Light* (2007). Queen Latifah also created her own daytime talk show, *The Queen Latifah Show*, which aired from 1999 to 2001 and again from 2013 to 2015.
Her impressive body of work has garnered her numerous accolades, including a Grammy, an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. In 2006, she became the first hip-hop artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, solidifying her legacy as one of the industry's most influential figures.
