Biography

Margaret Whitton was a talented American actress known for her impactful contributions to stage, film, and television, hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her prominent film career spanned from 1986 to 1993, during which she gained widespread recognition for her role as the ambitious baseball team owner Rachel Phelps in the beloved comedies Major League (1989) and its sequel, Major League II. Additionally, she showcased her comedic flair as the spirited aunt of Michael J. Fox in The Secret of My Success (1987). Whitton's filmography also includes appearances in The Best of Times (1986), alongside Robin Williams and Kurt Russell, and Mel Gibson's The Man Without a Face (1993).

Whitton's stage career began in earnest in 1973, initially credited as Peggy Whitton. By the early 1980s, she adopted the name Margaret Whitton and made her Broadway debut in the 1982 production Steaming. After a successful foray into film, she returned to the stage, starring in the Broadway play And the Apple Doesn't Fall... (1995) and the acclaimed musical Marlene (1999), which featured Siân Phillips in the titular role.
