Biography

Avery Franklin Brooks, born on October 2, 1948, is a multifaceted American actor, director, singer, narrator, and educator. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Captain Benjamin Sisko in the iconic series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as well as his roles as Hawk in Spenser: For Hire and its spin-off, A Man Called Hawk. Additionally, he delivered a powerful performance as Dr. Bob Sweeney in the critically acclaimed film American History X.

Originating from Evansville, Indiana, and raised in Gary, Indiana, Brooks pursued his passion for the arts at Oberlin College, where he focused on music and theater. Following his graduation, he ventured to New York City to embark on an acting career. His professional debut came in 1970 with the play The Great White Hope, leading to notable Broadway appearances in productions such as The Wiz and A Chorus Line. He also made his mark on television with a memorable role in the 1977 miniseries Roots.

Brooks's tenure as Captain Sisko began in 1993, earning him a Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television in 1995 during the show's seven-season run. After Deep Space Nine, he continued to shine on screen, starring in the series Shark from 2006 to 2008 and appearing in films like The Score. In addition to his acting prowess, Brooks is a talented musician, having released two albums, Song of My People and The Way I Feel, and has directed various theater productions and television episodes.
