Mary Treen
Biography
Mary Treen, born Mary Louise Summers on March 27, 1907, in St. Louis, Missouri, was an American actress known for her charming presence in film and television. She carved out a unique space for herself in Hollywood throughout the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, often portraying endearing support characters that added a touch of humor to various productions.
Raised by her mother, actress Helene Sullivan Summers, and her stepfather, a doctor, Treen's early life in California fostered her love for performance. She honed her acting skills in school plays at the Westlake School for Girls and a convent.
Over her career, Treen appeared in more than 40 films, with notable performances including Tilly in the classic It's a Wonderful Life (1946) and Pat in Kitty Foyle (1940), which starred Ginger Rogers. However, her most recognized role came as Hilda, the devoted maid and baby nurse on The Joey Bishop Show, where she appeared in 64 episodes from 1962 to 1965. Earlier, she also played Emily Dodger in the CBS sitcom Willy during the 1954-1955 season.
Mary Treen passed away on July 20, 1989, in Newport Beach, California, at the age of 82, after a battle with cancer. She left behind distant relatives, including actor Mort Mills, who remembered her fondly. Treen's legacy endures through her memorable performances that continue to bring joy to audiences.
