Seiji Miyaguchi
Biography
Seiji Miyaguchi (宮口 精二, Miyaguchi Seiji) was a prominent Japanese actor born on November 15, 1913, whose career spanned several decades and included noteworthy collaborations with some of Japan's most esteemed filmmakers. He is perhaps best remembered for his portrayal of Kyuzo, the skilled swordsman in Akira Kurosawa's classic film *Seven Samurai* (1954). Despite his admission that he had never wielded a sword before this iconic role, Miyaguchi's performance became a defining moment in his career, showcasing his ability to embody complex characters.
In addition to *Seven Samurai*, he delivered a memorable performance in the acclaimed film *Ikiru* (1952), where he played a yakuza boss navigating the intricacies of life in post-war Japan. Miyaguchi also took part in the supernatural anthology film *Kwaidan* (1964), directed by Masaki Kobayashi, further cementing his reputation in the cinematic landscape of Japan.
Throughout his career, Miyaguchi garnered respect and admiration for his versatility and depth as an actor. Unfortunately, his life was cut short when he succumbed to lung cancer on April 12, 1985. His contributions to Japanese cinema continue to be celebrated, and his performances remain influential in the realm of film.
