Frances Bay
Biography
Frances Evelyn Bay (née Goffman; January 23, 1919 – September 15, 2011) was a celebrated Canadian-American character actress, renowned for her portrayal of endearing and eccentric elderly women across both film and television. Over a remarkable 35-year career, she showcased her talent in various roles. Bay first gained prominence during World War II as "The Girlfriend to the Canadian Forces" on CBC Radio, where her performances helped uplift the spirits of troops.
Following her marriage and relocation to the United States, she took a break from acting to hone her craft under the guidance of esteemed acting coach Uta Hagen in New York City. At the age of 60, she made a triumphant return to the screen, starring in the comedy film Foul Play, which marked the beginning of a new chapter in her career. She became a familiar face on notable television series, including Twin Peaks, and appeared in films like Blue Velvet, The Wedding Planner, and Twins. Over her extensive career, Bay accumulated credits in more than 50 films and numerous television shows, earning multiple accolades for her performances. She left a lasting mark on the sitcom landscape, appearing in memorable finales of Seinfeld, Who’s the Boss?, and Happy Days. In recognition of her contributions to the entertainment industry, she was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2008.
