John Kani
Biography
Bonsile John Kani, born in 1943 in New Brighton, South Africa, is a renowned actor, director, and playwright. Kani embarked on his theatrical journey in 1965, joining The Serpent Players in Port Elizabeth, where he contributed to several unpublished plays that garnered significant acclaim. His collaboration with Athol Fugard and Winston Ntshona led to the creation of two iconic works, *Sizwe Banzi Is Dead* and *The Island*, during the early 1970s. Their performances earned them a Tony Award in 1975, following a successful 52-show run at the Edison Theatre in New York.
Kani also received an Olivier nomination for his role in *My Children! My Africa!*. His work continued to resonate beyond South Africa, with *Nothing but the Truth*, which he penned in 2002, marking his debut as a solo playwright. This powerful play addresses the complexities of post-apartheid South Africa, particularly the divisions among those who stayed to fight against apartheid and those who left. It won the Fleur du Cap Awards for Best Actor and Best New South African Play in 2003, the same year he received a special Obie Award for his exceptional contributions to American theatre. Kani serves as the executive trustee of the Market Theatre Foundation, the founder and director of the Market Theatre Laboratory, and the chairman of the National Arts Council of South Africa, reflecting his ongoing commitment to the arts.
