Jackie Cooper
Biography
Jackie Cooper (September 15, 1922 – May 3, 2011) was a celebrated American actor, best recognized for his portrayal of Perry White in the Superman films featuring Christopher Reeve, released between 1978 and 1987.
During the latter stages of World War II, Cooper served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. Following the war, he embarked on an impressive career in the Naval Reserve, marked by his commitment to service and leadership. In 1961, while starring in the television series Hennesey (1959), which supported naval recruitment, he accepted a commission as a line officer. His responsibilities included recruitment, production of training films, and public relations. A licensed multi-engine pilot, Cooper later co-piloted jet aircraft for the Navy, earning the distinction of Honorary Aviator and becoming one of the few individuals in naval aviation history to wear gold wings. By 1976, he had risen to the rank of captain and participated in the USS Constellation's Bicentennial celebration on July 4.
In 1980, the Navy offered him a chance for active duty at the Pentagon, which would have promoted him to rear admiral, aligning him with fellow actor James Stewart's rank as brigadier general in the Air Force Reserve. However, Cooper declined the opportunity, prioritizing his aspiration to direct films. Over his distinguished military career, he received commendations from six Navy secretaries, was the honorary chairman of the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation, and a founding member of VIVA, advocating for the return of POW-MIAs from Vietnam. He retired in 1982 with the Legion of Merit, a testament to his significant contributions. Other than Stewart, he remains one of the highest-ranking performers in U.S. military history.
