Esther Dale (November 10, 1885 – July 23, 1961) was a distinguished American actress who left an indelible mark on both stage and screen. She is perhaps most recognized for her memorable performance as Aunt Genevieve in the beloved 1935 film *Curly Top*, starring Shirley Temple.
Dale's theatrical career flourished on Broadway, where she showcased her talent in productions such as *Carrie Nation* (1933) and *Harvest of Years* (1947). Her versatility was evident in works like *And Be My Love* (1944) and *Another Language* (1932), which solidified her status as a prominent figure in American theater.
Her cinematic journey began with an uncredited role in *Crime Without Passion* (1934), and she quickly became a recognizable presence in films throughout the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Often cast in authoritative roles, she portrayed stern characters, including prison matrons and head nurses, yet also excelled in roles as elegant grande dames.
Dale's television appearances added to her extensive repertoire, with notable guest roles in series such as *The Donna Reed Show* during the 1958-1959 season, where she played a housekeeper startled by a pet mouse, and in the 1957 episode of *Maverick* titled "According to Hoyle," alongside the legendary James Garner.
