Biography

Anne Bancroft, originally named Anna Maria Louisa Italiano, was an acclaimed American actress born on September 17, 1931, in the Bronx, New York. She was the middle child in a family of three daughters born to Mildred, a telephone operator, and Michael G. Italiano, a dress pattern maker. Both parents were immigrants from Southern Italy, and Bancroft often spoke of her family's roots in Muro Lucano, located in the province of Potenza. Raised in a Roman Catholic household in the Belmont neighborhood of the Bronx, she attended local schools including P.S. 12.

Bancroft's talent first gained attention on Broadway with her performance in the two-character play Two for the Seesaw (1958), which earned her a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress. She solidified her status as a leading actress by winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker (1962) and received another nomination for her iconic portrayal of Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate (1967).

Her illustrious career extended into both film and television with noteworthy appearances in films like The Elephant Man (1980), Agnes of God (1985), and 84 Charing Cross Road (1987). She also made guest appearances on the popular television series Modern Family.

Bancroft was married to director Mel Brooks from 1964 until her passing in 2005, and they welcomed one son, Max Brooks. Her legacy endures as one of the few performers to receive the prestigious Triple Crown of Acting, having won an Academy Award, multiple BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Tony Awards, and Emmys.
