Mona Washbourne

Biography

Mona Lee Washbourne (27 November 1903 – 15 November 1988) was a distinguished English actress recognized for her work across stage, film, and television. Born in Solihull, Warwickshire, she initially trained as a concert pianist before transitioning to acting.

Her professional acting career began on stage in the late 1940s, with her film debut occurring in 1948. Over the years, she participated in several notable films, including the horror classic The Brides of Dracula (1960), Billy Liar (1963), and The Collector (1965). However, she gained considerable acclaim for her portrayal of Mrs. Pearce, the housekeeper in the beloved musical My Fair Lady (1964). In the same year, she also played the formidable Mrs. Bramson in the remake of Night Must Fall and the matron in If.... (1968).

Washbourne's stage presence was equally impressive; she performed at London's Royal Court Theatre and made her Broadway debut in 1970 with David Storey's Home, earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play. In 1975, she starred alongside James Stewart in a revival of Harvey, taking on the role originally played by Josephine Hull. Her performance in Stevie (1978) garnered her the New York Film Critics' Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress.

In her later years, she appeared in the acclaimed miniseries Brideshead Revisited (1981) and the poignant BBC play Where's the Key? (1983). Washbourne was married to actor Basil Dignam from 1940 until his death in 1979. She passed away in London in 1988 at the age of 84.
